The Schwinn 420 elliptical trainer seems like a great value. I put it togther with minimal help in under 2 hours.
I used it for the first time today and it is very stable and smooth. The only thing I've noticed so far is an annoying squeek in the gears somewhere. I contacted customer service.
One thing I can't understand is the lack of a water bottle holder and ease of programming the console.
The programming I'm not really worried about because I can adjust the levels as I go, but the lack of a water bottle holder is just wrong.

The Schwinn 420 elliptical trainer is a great machine. We researched and "test drove" a variety of ellipticals, looking for one that would fit both our space restrictions and our budget. In a variety of fitness equipment stores, this one was easily the winner for size and price.
Our best price was through the Sears catalog. It was easy to assemble (less than two hours by myself), and is very stable, smooth and quiet.
The only drawback is the lack of back-lighting on the display, and the fact there is no water bottle holder. All in all, the Schwinn 420 elliptical is the best value for the money that we could find.
Having had it now for several months, there have been absolutely no issues.

I love this elliptical. I'm very careful with my money and how I spend it and I know that I made a great purchase on this machine.
I shopped around, and ended up buying the Schwinn 420 elliptical from Sports Authority for $499. I did my research, which paid off because I read at Dicks that shipping is $7 and Sports Authority charges $50 when they price mark it at $499 (Which I had them check at the register because it was marked $599).
Downside: there is no fan and no ipod hook up.
Upside: the programs are great, and I won't say the machine is super quiet but I tested a couple and it makes nearly no noise, just clicks every so often.
**I didn't buy the warranty - I figure if I buy something new I would hope that it works for at least a year or two. The salesmen told me that this model generally lasts around 2-3 years, which is well worth it! I'm very pleased.

The Schwinn 430 elliptical trainer is an excellent machine for the price. Assembly can be intimidating, but all that means is that you must follow each step carefully.
Fortunately my husband is an engineer, so he took the many parts, nuts, and bolts and was able to put a solid machine together fairly quickly following the detailed instructions.
I can personally attest to the fact that you can get a killer workout on the Schwinn 430.
There are enough resistance levels and programs that fitness buffs and athletes of varying abilities will be satisfied. I am a passionate, though not very talented, marathoner and was looking for an affordable but well built machine for cross-training purposes.
The Schwinn 430 elliptical certainly fit the bill.

After lot of research (on your website as well as others) on a good quality budget elliptical machine I bought the Schwinn 430 elliptical trainer from a fitness equipment store in Canada (Fitness Depot).
I chose the Schwinn 430 as it appeared to be performing satisfactory with other users with a budget up to $1000.
It took 3-1/2 hours to assemble the machine. In the begining the assembly looked as a colossal task, however once the base is assembled the rest of the assembly was not too diffcult.
The assembly manual that comes with the Schwinn 430 was fairly good, however it did lack some finer details as to the exact type of bolts to use at the later stages of assembly; however it was not too difficult to figure that out.
I knew about the squeaking problem that people experienced (from other reviews) and it did started to squeak the next day. However, I had to only loosen up the bolts a bit (from where the sound was coming from) and the squeaking went away.
The stride length of 18" feels a little short (my height is 5'11") but a good compromise for this price tag. Display screen is ok; I didnt face any problem in reading it.
It's now over a week and so far so good. I'll keep you posted as the journey continues.
By the way, I also purchased Fitness Depot's blue chip warranty for 5 years which provides parts and labour for the Schwinn 430 elliptical free of charge. I'll see how that works when needed.

After hours of research and comparing brands, models and prices the Schwinn 430 was the one that seemed to fit my needs and budget.
If you follow the assembly manual directions, this unit should go together with little trouble. The manual gets a "B" - a couple of enlarged exploded illustration of the leg and handlebar assembly would be more helpful.
On some of the assembly drawings the parts are too small to make out what you are looking at.
Assembly went very smoothly, but after everything was tightened down the bolt hole in the handlebar bracket did not align with the Arm Cotter Pin, but a small pry bar fixed this problem.
Another small drawback is that every joint with the black plastic bushings had plastic shavings inside of them; this is a quality control issue that should have been caught during the manufacturing process. These I removed with a small rag and a flat head screwdriver.
Operation is smooth as glass and the Schwinn 430 is whisper quiet. During my workout I was able to talk to my wife in the next room and she couldn’t hear a sound. Using the unit on a carpeted floor there was no wobbling during my workout. The display is hard to read in dim light, but with an overhead light or a light behind you it is easy to read the display.
I have been a runner since early High School, now at age 52 and two knee surgeries my joints hurt if I try to jog, or use a treadmill.
Last night the Schwinn 430 kicked my out-of-shape butt and this morning I have sore muscles but no joint or back pain. I am already enjoying this workout equipment and can’t wait for round 2 today.

I posted comments on my previous elliptical, the Horizon EX-59, which did not hold up to the stress of this boy.
The Schwinn 430 elliptical trainer has been an excellent machine since adhering to the advice on this site. After researching other sites and information on the Schwinn 430/431, I have NOT regretted the purchase.
It is built right and it will last a long time, which is important to me. Also, the work out is very good. My legs, hips, lower back, abs, and upper body always feels the work out. Other machines don't seem to be so balanced in working all of your body.
If you are looking for a real workout, a well built machine, and one that is definitely worth the money, go with this machine. I'd rather work out on this machine than higher-end, more expensive machines. I've been on them.
The work out is not better and the machines are not built better than this Schwinn 430! In fact, why waste your time or money when this machine WILL do it and hold up to the time test!

Lost 5 pounds in the first week of using it. Great elliptical for the money.

I bought a Schwinn elliptical trainer from my hair stylist after I tried it one day at her house. It has trimmed me down and strengthened me like nothing else.
Combined with the Bob Greene life plan I have lost 23 pounds so far and lost 4 clothes sizes. I also do weights and lots of walking.
The trainer has built me up to be able to easily push my work med cart, mow the grass without a care, pick residents off the floor when they fall, and run to codes without even breaking much of a sweat. Amazing for a 49 year old too!!
I also have an Airdyne for cross training.
Thanks, Laura

I love the Schwinn 420 elliptical trainer. For the money it is INCREDIBLE!!! They usually run $599.00, I got mine on sale, assembled for $499.00. I am a newbie but find I can work my way up to a hard workout very easily. Don't hesitate to buy one.
